Map Guess

A photo of a real place comes up. You click the country you think it is on the world map. Your chat types a country, and chat plays the country most of it named. The right country scores 100, a wrong one less the farther it is from the place, the same for both sides. 67 photos from 61 countries, from Alpine villages to desert pyramids.

How a round works

  1. 1

    A photo appears

A real place from one of six continents, with the photographer and the licence shown underneath.

  2. 2

    You pick a country

Click it on the world map. Scroll to zoom, drag to move, click another country to change your pick.

  3. 3

    Chat names a country

In English, German, Spanish, Portuguese or French, like Japan or Brasilien. Each chatter's last country counts, and chat plays the country most of it named.

  4. 4

    The reveal

The real spot appears on the map. The right country scores 100. A wrong country is measured from its middle to the place: the closer, the more points.

  5. 5

    Most points wins

After the last photo, the side with more points wins. Every chatter collects points of their own the same way.

What viewers type in chat

JapanThe country you think the photo is from, in any of the five languages. Your last country counts.
usa · uk · uaeA few short names work too, and so do small typos.
!mapguessMods: open the setup (!map works too).

Streamer settings

  • Photos with credit

67 photos from Wikimedia Commons under free licences. The photographer and the licence stay on screen with every photo.

  • Every country counts

Chat can name any of 237 countries and territories, in English, German, Spanish, Portuguese or French, with typos forgiven. A message that names two countries counts as neither.

  • A country each, a fair fight

You and chat both guess a country, and both pins sit in the middle of that country. Nobody gets a more exact click than the other, and a near miss still beats a far one.

  • Your length

1 to 10 photos (5 by default) and 15 to 120 seconds per photo (45 by default). Mods set them with !rounds and !timer.

Questions streamers ask

How does chat answer?

By typing a country, in English, German, Spanish, Portuguese or French. Each chatter's last country counts, and chat plays the country most of it named. On a tie, the country that got there first wins.

How does the streamer answer?

By clicking a country on the world map. You can switch to another country until the time is up.

How are points given?

The right country scores 100. A wrong country scores less the farther its middle is from the place, and never the full 100. Streamer and chat score the same way, and the side with more points after the last photo wins.

Does stream delay matter?

Hardly. Chat can change its country until the timer ends, and guesses still count for a couple of seconds after zero.

Where do the photos come from?

From Wikimedia Commons, under free licences such as CC BY-SA and CC0. The author and the licence are shown under every photo, and the full list with every source and licence link is at chatgames.pro/mapguess/SOURCES.md.
